I bow to the acharya Anandazhvan, who is the repository of auspicious qualities, who removes ignorance, and who is the refuge of those who seek him. This stanza is dedicated to Anandampillai (ಅನಂದಾಂಪಿಳ್ಳೈ), who was my mom’s forefather.

One who does not leave Ramanuja just like his shadow, the one who obtains happiness from those holy lotus feet, the one who has the name of Govinda Perumal, I bow before that person who is my resting place.  This para is dedicated to Embar (ಎಂಬಾರ್ ) who is my forefather.

Embar’s another name was Govinda. His mathula (uncle) was Periya Tirumale Nambi, who had two sisters- Sridevi and Bhudevi. Sridevi married Kamalanayana Bhattar and gave birth to Embar. Sridevi’s sister Bhudevi also known as Kantimathi, gave birth to Ramanuja in Sripeumbudur.  Embar was born in Mazhalaimangala (Maduramangala) in the thai month in the star punarvasu (popularly known as thai pusam).  While Ramanuja protected/discovered Thirunarayanapura (melkote), Ramanuja was protected by Embar. Embar studied along with cousin brother Ramanuja near Yadavaprakasha. Yadava Prakasha wanted to kill Ramanuja and planned a Ganga Yatra with all disciples.  At that time, Embar comes to Ramanuja and asked to escape.  When Embar was bathing, he got a stone in his hand.  When he asked what this stone is, Yadavaprakashar asked him to do bhasma dhari in Kalahasti by removing all thiruman.  Ramanuja had escaped due to Devaraja’s grace but was worried that Embar could not escape Yadavaprakashar.  Ramanuja requested Periya Tirumalai Nambi to bring back Embar. Periya Tirumalai Nambi goes to Kalahasti. In the meanwhile Ramanuja asked another Srivaishnavite to check what happens.  The said Vasihnavite narrated the said proceedings in the form of a dialogue mentioned in guru parampara prabhavam.

There is a flower Kandakari flower which should not be adorned for God.  Nanjeeyar says that because of thorns in it, God does not want the devotees to use that flower, but actually, god will receive any flower with love and affection.  In case, there are both scented and non scented flowers, then one should select scented.  Periya Tirumalai Nambi was waiting at a place where Embar (who was then named a Ullamkaikolanda Nayanar).  Nambi recites the Alavandar’s below stanza from Stotra Ratnam:

svabhavikanavadhikatisayesitritvam ಸ್ವಾಭಾವಿಕ ಅನವಧಿಕ ಅತಿಶಯ ಶಿತೃತ್ವಂ

O Lord Narayana, what learned Vedic scholar will not accept You as the all-powerful and unlimited Personality of Godhead? Brahma, Siva, Indra, and the liberated residents of Vaikuntha are but drops in the ocean of Your transcendental glory.
